As Britain's oldest recorded town, Colchester has a housing stock that is extraordinarily diverse. From Roman foundations and medieval timber frames to Georgian townhouses, Victorian terraces, and modern estates, the town presents every possible damp and timber challenge. KDS Property Preservation has the experience and technical expertise to handle all of them.
The Dutch Quarter and the streets around the Castle are home to some of Colchester's most characterful — and challenging — properties. Medieval timber-framed buildings with lime plaster walls sit alongside Georgian brick townhouses with deep cellars. These properties require sympathetic treatments that work with the building's original breathable construction, not against it. We use lime-based renders, breathable membranes, and targeted timber treatments that preserve the building's heritage while solving damp and decay issues.
Colchester's New Town area, with its grid of Victorian terraces, is where we see the most rising damp. These solidly built brick houses were constructed without adequate damp proof courses, and after 120+ years, rising damp is almost universal. Our treatment — chemical DPC injection, removal of salt-contaminated plaster, and re-plastering with salt-retardant render — is a proven solution that we carry out dozens of times every year in New Town and surrounding streets.
