The Simple Solution in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

A French Drain is a trench filled with gravel or rock, containing a perforated pipe that redirects surface water and groundwater away from an area. It is one of the most effective traditional methods for dealing with damp walls.

We typically install these around the perimeter of older properties where high ground levels are causing damp. By digging a trench 150mm away from the wall and filling it with aggregate, we break the capillary bridge between the damp earth and the brickwork, allowing the wall to breathe and dry out naturally.

    Filtration

We line the entire trench with a non-woven geotextile membrane. This lets water through but stops soil and silt from clogging up the pipe.

    Flow

We install a 100mm perforated plastic land drain pipe at the bottom of the trench, bedded in pea shingle, to rapidly carry water away.

    Finish

The drain is backfilled with clean washed stone and can be topped with decorative pebbles or gravel to look neat and tidy against the house.

    French Drain Questions

How can I tell whether a French drain is likely to address a water problem?

Observe where water collects, when it appears, and whether it follows rainfall, a leaking downpipe or a persistently wet area. Surface runoff, a blocked drain and groundwater can look similar but require different investigation. Check where existing drains discharge and avoid directing water toward neighbouring property or foundations. The site levels and soil conditions need to be considered before selecting a drainage layout; garden drainage may also be relevant.
