Understanding Wet Rot in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

Wet Rot (Coniophora puteana) is the most common cause of timber decay in the UK. As the name suggests, it requires a high moisture content (around 50%) to thrive.

It is typically found in areas where water has been leaking for some time: under kitchen sinks, around bath/shower trays, under leaking roofs, or on skirting boards affected by rising damp. While less aggressive than Dry Rot (it doesn't spread through masonry), it can still cause floor joists to collapse if left untreated.

    Wet Rot Signs

    • Affects very damp wood only
    • Stays local to the damp source
    • Black/brown fungal strands
    • Wood darkens significantly

    Dry Rot Signs

    • Can attack drier wood (20% moisture)
    • Spreads through walls to other rooms
    • White cotton-wool mycelium
    • Wood cracks into large cubes

Our Solutions in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

    1. Stop the Moisture

Wet rot will die naturally if the moisture source is removed. We identify and fix the leak, rising damp, or ventilation issue causing the wetness.

    2. Cut Out & Replace

Severely weakened timbers (like joist ends) are cut back to sound wood. We replace them with pre-treated timber, often using resin splices for structural strength.

    3. Chemical Treatment

We spray the surrounding area with a fungicide to prevent any spores from germinating while the structure dries out.

Assessing Timber Affected by Wet Rot

Does finding wet rot mean every timber in the room must be replaced?

Not necessarily. The necessary repair depends on the extent of decay, the timber's structural role, and whether it can be dried after the moisture source is fixed. Sound material may not need replacement, while weakened sections may require repair or renewal. A surface check cannot establish the full condition of concealed timbers, so identify the source of persistent moisture and have affected structural wood assessed.
