Cambridge is a city of remarkable contrasts. The historic university buildings of the city centre — many of them medieval and Tudor in construction — sit alongside the Victorian terraces of the Romsey, Petersfield, and Mill Road areas, the Edwardian villas of Newnham and Chesterton, and an ever-expanding ring of modern developments at Trumpington, North West Cambridge, and Eddington. Each building era presents its own damp and timber challenges, and KDS Property Preservation has the expertise to address all of them.
The Victorian terraces of CB1 — particularly those in the Romsey and Mill Road area — have a very high prevalence of rising damp. Built on clay and river gravel soils close to the River Cam, these properties have either no original damp proof course or a long-failed slate course. Rising damp affects the vast majority of ground floor rooms in these terraces that have not been properly treated, causing tide marks, salt efflorescence, crumbling plaster, and rotting skirting boards.
Cambridge's student rental sector creates some of the highest condensation levels we encounter anywhere in our operating area. Multi-occupancy properties with multiple occupants, airtight modern windows, and inadequate ventilation produce very high internal humidity levels. We provide condensation control solutions — principally Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) unit installation — for landlords across CB1, CB2, and CB3, and we work with letting agents and property management companies to provide rapid response solutions for their rental portfolio.
