Does every area of discoloured or softened timber need replacing?
No. The appearance alone does not establish how much sound timber remains or whether the damage is active. An assessment should identify the likely cause, check moisture conditions, establish the extent of decay and consider the timber’s structural role. Repair or replacement is generally considered where the remaining section is not adequate for its purpose; treatment choices should address the underlying moisture source as well as affected timber.
