Invisible Protection for Your Walls in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

If you love the natural look of your brick, stone, or masonry property, the last thing you want to do is cover it with paint or render. But porous masonry acts like a sponge — it absorbs rain, which leads to penetrating damp, heat loss, frost damage, and unsightly algae and moss growth on the wall surface.

Clear waterproof coatings solve this problem by providing a completely invisible water-repellent barrier that stops rain from soaking into the masonry whilst still allowing moisture vapour to escape from within the wall. The result is a dry, protected wall that looks exactly the same as before — but performs dramatically better.

At KDS Property Preservation, we use premium silane/siloxane-based masonry protection creams such as Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream. Unlike cheap liquid silicone sealers that sit on the surface and leave a shiny "wet look", our cream-based products penetrate deep into the pores of the masonry (up to 12mm) and bond chemically with the substrate. Once cured, the treatment is completely invisible — you cannot see it, feel it, or smell it.

The "beading effect" — water rolls straight off treated brickwork

    The Science Behind It

Silane/siloxane technology works by lining the inside of every pore in the masonry with a water-repellent molecular layer. Liquid water (rain) has too much surface tension to enter the treated pores, so it beads up and runs off. But water vapour molecules are small enough to pass through, so the wall continues to "breathe" naturally. This is critical for preventing trapped moisture and condensation within the wall structure.

Benefits of Clear Wall Coatings in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

Clear masonry protection offers a unique combination of benefits that no other exterior treatment can match.

    Completely Invisible

Unlike coloured coatings or render, a clear treatment preserves the natural appearance of your brickwork, stone, or masonry exactly as it is. No colour change, no sheen, no visible film.

    Stops Penetrating Damp

By preventing rain from soaking into your walls, clear coatings eliminate penetrating damp at the source. Internal damp patches, peeling wallpaper, and musty smells caused by rain penetration are resolved.

    Improves Energy Efficiency

A wet wall loses heat up to twice as fast as a dry wall. By keeping your masonry dry, clear coatings can improve your home's thermal efficiency by up to 29%, helping to reduce heating bills significantly.

    Prevents Frost Damage

When water in porous brickwork freezes, it expands and causes the brick face to crack and spall (crumble). Clear coatings prevent water absorption, eliminating frost damage entirely.

    Fully Breathable

Our treatments are 100% breathable (microporous). They allow water vapour to pass through the wall from inside to outside, preventing trapped moisture and condensation within the masonry.

    Long-Lasting Protection

Premium masonry protection creams like Stormdry are independently tested to provide water-repellent protection for up to 25 years — far longer than liquid silicone sealers which typically last only 3 to 5 years.

Suitable Surfaces in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

Clear waterproof coatings are effective on a wide range of porous masonry surfaces.

    Ideal Surfaces

    • Exposed brick walls (all brick types)
    • Natural stone (flint, limestone, sandstone)
    • Concrete block walls and rendered surfaces
    • Pebble-dash and roughcast finishes
    • Reconstituted stone and cast stone
    • Chimneys and parapet walls
    • Garden walls and boundary walls

    Not Suitable For

    • Previously painted surfaces (paint must be removed first)
    • Non-porous materials (glass, metal, plastic)
    • Walls with active rising damp (must be treated first)
    • Surfaces with existing silicone sealers applied
    • Green or heavily algae-covered walls (must be cleaned first)

How We Apply Clear Coatings in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

Proper preparation is essential for a clear coating to perform correctly. Applying a waterproof cream to a dirty or damaged wall will not deliver lasting results. Here is our process:

    1

    Free Wall Inspection

We visit your property to assess the condition of your masonry, identify the cause of any damp problems, and confirm that a clear coating is the right solution. If the damp is caused by rising damp rather than penetrating damp, a clear coating alone will not solve the problem — we will advise on the correct treatment.

    2

    Wall Cleaning

All surfaces are thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, algae, moss, lichen, and any loose or friable material. Depending on the substrate, we use high-pressure washing, steam cleaning, or manual scrubbing. The wall must be clean and free of organic growth before the coating is applied.

    3

    Pointing & Repairs

Any cracked, missing, or defective pointing is raked out and re-pointed with an appropriate mortar mix. Cracks in render or masonry are filled. The wall must be in good structural condition before waterproofing — a clear coating will not bridge large gaps or missing mortar joints.

    4

    Drying Period

The wall must be dry before the masonry protection cream is applied. After cleaning, we allow sufficient drying time (typically 24 to 48 hours in dry weather) for the moisture content of the masonry to drop to an acceptable level.

    5

    Cream Application

The masonry protection cream is applied in a single generous coat using a roller, brush, or low-pressure sprayer. The cream is white when first applied but becomes completely invisible as it cures, typically within one to two hours depending on the weather. We ensure full, even coverage across all treated surfaces.

Clear Coating vs. Liquid Silicone Sealers in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

There are many cheap liquid silicone water repellents available from DIY stores. While these may seem like a budget-friendly option, they have significant drawbacks compared to professional-grade masonry protection creams.

Liquid sealers are thin and watery. They run off the wall quickly, meaning they only penetrate a few millimetres into the surface. They often leave an unnatural shiny "wet look" on the brickwork, and because they sit near the surface, they wear away in just three to five years — especially on south- and west-facing walls that take the brunt of the weather.

Cream-based products like Stormdry have a thick, paste-like consistency. They cling to the wall surface long enough to soak in deeply — penetrating up to 12mm into the masonry. This deep penetration means the treatment bonds chemically within the pores of the brick or stone, making it far more durable and effective. The finish is completely invisible with no colour change or sheen whatsoever.

Frequently Asked Questions in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

Clear masonry protection is often the ideal choice for listed buildings and properties in conservation areas because it does not alter the appearance of the masonry in any way. There is no colour change, no visible film, and no change in texture. However, we always recommend checking with your local conservation officer before carrying out any treatment on a listed building.

The cost depends on the total area to be treated and the amount of preparation work required (cleaning, re-pointing, etc.). As a guide, treating the external walls of a typical three-bedroom semi-detached house costs between £1,500 and £3,000 including all preparation. We provide free, no-obligation quotations so you can get an accurate price for your property.

Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream has been independently tested and verified to provide water-repellent protection for up to 25 years. This is significantly longer than liquid silicone sealers, which typically last three to five years. The deep penetration of the cream into the masonry means it is not worn away by weather exposure at the surface.

No. Clear wall coatings are designed to stop penetrating damp (rain being driven through the wall from outside). Rising damp is caused by ground moisture being drawn up through the masonry by capillary action and requires a different treatment — typically a chemical damp proof course injection. If we identify rising damp during our inspection, we will recommend the appropriate treatment.

Yes, you can apply masonry paint or a coloured wall coating over a surface previously treated with a clear masonry protection cream. The clear treatment will not prevent paint from adhering. However, we recommend allowing the clear coating to fully cure (at least 24 hours) before over-painting.

While it is possible to apply masonry protection cream yourself on ground-level areas, we strongly recommend professional application for the best results. The preparation work — thorough cleaning, re-pointing, and ensuring the wall is dry — is critical to the coating's performance. Applying the cream to a dirty, damaged, or wet wall will significantly reduce its effectiveness and lifespan. Professional application also ensures access to upper floors via scaffolding.

    Clear Exterior Coating Questions

What should be checked before applying a clear coating to masonry?

Check whether the surface is sound, clean and dry, and look for loose material, open joints, salts or water entering through defects. A clear finish does not repair damaged masonry, and the underlying cause of moisture should be understood first. The wall material and existing finishes also affect product compatibility and drying. Assess the substrate and exposure before selecting a coating; other exterior finishes may be more appropriate.
