What Is Thin Wall Insulation in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex?

Thin wall insulation is an internal insulation system designed specifically for properties where standard insulation methods — such as thick thermal plasterboard or external wall insulation — are either impractical, too disruptive, or would result in an unacceptable loss of room space. It uses advanced, ultra-slim insulation materials that are applied directly to the inside surface of cold external walls.

Standard thermal plasterboard (PIR-backed) adds 50 to 100mm to the wall thickness, which can make small rooms feel cramped and requires moving skirting boards, architraves, sockets, and switches. Thin wall insulation products like Iso-Therm, Wallrock Thermal Liner, and Spacetherm Aerogel achieve a meaningful improvement in wall temperature at a fraction of the thickness — typically just 3mm to 10mm.

While thin wall insulation won't achieve the same U-value improvement as thicker systems, it is highly effective at raising the internal wall surface temperature above the dew point — which is the critical threshold at which condensation forms. For many properties across Suffolk, Norfolk, and Essex, this is exactly what is needed to solve persistent condensation and black mould problems on cold external walls.

    Ideal Applications

    • Cold external walls suffering from condensation
    • Window reveals, heads, and soffits
    • Small bedrooms, hallways, and box rooms
    • Behind radiators (without moving them)
    • Bay windows and curved walls
    • Dormer cheeks and sloping ceilings
    • Listed buildings where thick insulation is not permitted
    • Properties where minimal disruption is essential

    Why Does Condensation Form?

Warm, moist air inside your home hits the cold surface of an uninsulated external wall. When the wall surface is below the "dew point" temperature, the moisture in the air condenses into water droplets on the wall. Over time, this creates the perfect conditions for black mould growth. Thin wall insulation raises the wall surface temperature above the dew point, stopping condensation from forming.

Benefits of Thin Wall Insulation in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

Thin wall insulation solves cold wall and condensation problems with minimal disruption and virtually no loss of room space.

    Stops Condensation

By raising the internal wall surface temperature above the dew point, thin wall insulation prevents condensation from forming — eliminating the root cause of mould growth on cold walls.

    Minimal Space Loss

At just 3mm to 10mm thick, these systems take up a fraction of the space compared to standard thermal plasterboard (50 – 100mm). You won't notice the difference in room size.

    Quick Installation

Most rooms can be completed within a single day. There is no need for scaffolding, no major building work, and in many cases no need to move skirting boards or sockets.

    Prevents Black Mould

Black mould thrives on cold, damp wall surfaces. By keeping the wall warm and dry, thin wall insulation removes the conditions that mould needs to grow.

    Fully Breathable

Our thin wall insulation systems are breathable, allowing moisture vapour to pass through the wall structure naturally. This prevents moisture becoming trapped within the wall.

    Warmer, More Comfortable Rooms

Cold walls radiate chill into the room, making it feel colder than the thermostat suggests. Insulated walls feel warm to the touch, making rooms noticeably more comfortable.

Our Thin Wall Insulation Systems in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

We offer three proven thin wall insulation products, each suited to different budgets and performance requirements.

    Iso-Therm

Iso-Therm is a revolutionary thin wall insulation system specifically designed for the treatment of cold, condensation-prone walls. It consists of a specially formulated insulating plaster applied directly to the wall surface at approximately 6 – 8mm thickness. Unlike sheet or roll products, Iso-Therm is trowel-applied, meaning it moulds perfectly to every contour, corner, and irregularity in the wall — leaving no gaps or cold bridges.

Iso-Therm contains millions of tiny hollow glass microspheres suspended in a breathable, cementitious matrix. These microspheres create a thermal break between the cold masonry and the room, raising the wall surface temperature above the dew point and stopping condensation. It is fully breathable, compatible with lime plaster, and suitable for use on heritage and listed buildings.

    • Trowel-applied — no gaps or cold bridges
    • 6 – 8mm thickness — minimal space loss
    • Breathable and compatible with lime plaster
    • Ideal for heritage and listed buildings
    • Can be painted or wallpapered over
    Recommended for condensation

    Wallrock Thermal Liner

Wallrock Thermal Liner is a thick, fibrous wallpaper-like product that is pasted directly to the wall surface. At just 3.2mm thick, it is the slimmest option available and the simplest to install. It provides a smooth, warm-to-touch surface that stops walls feeling cold and clammy, and can be painted or wallpapered over immediately.

While it provides less thermal improvement than Iso-Therm or Aerogel, Wallrock is an excellent budget-friendly option for rooms where condensation is mild and the primary concern is eliminating the cold, uncomfortable feel of external walls. It also covers hairline cracks and reinforces old plaster.

    • Just 3.2mm thick — almost invisible
    • Applied like wallpaper — quick and easy
    • Covers cracks and reinforces old plaster
    • Paint or wallpaper directly over it
    • Most affordable option
    Budget friendly

    Spacetherm Aerogel

Aerogel is the most thermally efficient solid insulator known to science — originally developed by NASA for space applications. Spacetherm Aerogel blanket is a 10mm-thick flexible sheet that provides insulation performance equivalent to 50mm or more of conventional PIR board, but at a fraction of the thickness.

It is particularly useful in window reveals and other tight areas where even 6mm of Iso-Therm would restrict the opening. Aerogel is the premium option — significantly more expensive than other thin wall products — but unbeatable where maximum performance in minimum thickness is required.

    • 10mm thick — performance of 50mm+ PIR
    • The most efficient solid insulator available
    • Ideal for window reveals and tight spaces
    • Flexible — moulds to curves and corners
    • Premium performance product

How We Install Thin Wall Insulation in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

Our installation process is designed to be as quick and non-disruptive as possible. In most cases, we can insulate a room within a single day.

    1

    Free Inspection & Recommendation

We visit your property to assess the cold walls, check for underlying damp issues (which must be treated first), and recommend the most suitable thin wall insulation system for your situation. We provide a detailed written quotation.

    2

    Wall Preparation

The wall surface is cleaned and any loose plaster, old wallpaper, or flaking paint is removed. If there are any underlying damp problems (rising damp, penetrating damp), these must be resolved before insulation is applied.

    3

    Insulation Application

The chosen insulation system is applied directly to the wall surface. Iso-Therm is trowel-applied in a continuous coat. Wallrock is pasted and hung like heavy-duty wallpaper. Aerogel sheets are cut to size and adhesive-bonded to the wall.

    4

    Finishing

Once the insulation is in place, the surface is finished ready for decoration. Iso-Therm receives a skim coat of plaster. Wallrock can be painted or wallpapered directly. Aerogel is typically covered with a thin plasterboard or skim coat. The room is left clean and tidy.

Frequently Asked Questions in Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex

Thermal plasterboard (PIR-backed board such as Celotex or Kingspan) is typically 50 to 100mm thick and provides a significant improvement in thermal performance (U-value). It is the best option when maximum insulation is needed. Thin wall insulation (3 – 10mm) provides less overall thermal improvement but is designed specifically to raise the wall surface temperature above the dew point to prevent condensation. It is the better choice when space is limited, disruption must be minimal, or the primary problem is condensation rather than general heat loss. See our thermal plasterboard page for more information on thicker systems.

In most cases, yes. Condensation forms when warm, moist air hits a cold wall surface. By insulating the wall, even with a thin layer, the internal surface temperature is raised above the dew point, meaning moisture in the air no longer condenses on the wall. However, if the room has inadequate ventilation or excessive moisture production (cooking, showering, drying clothes indoors), additional ventilation measures such as a PIV unit may also be needed.

Iso-Therm is a specialist insulating plaster system containing millions of tiny hollow glass microspheres. These microspheres create a thermal break between the cold masonry and the living space. It is trowel-applied directly to the wall in a continuous coat, meaning there are no joints, no gaps, and no cold bridges — unlike sheet or board products which can leave gaps at edges and junctions. It is fully breathable, compatible with lime substrates, and suitable for period and listed buildings.

Costs vary depending on the product chosen and the area to be covered. Wallrock Thermal Liner is the most affordable option. Iso-Therm is mid-range and offers the best balance of performance and cost for most condensation problems. Aerogel is the most expensive but provides the highest performance per millimetre. We provide free, no-obligation quotations so you can compare options for your specific property.

Yes. Thin wall insulation systems — particularly Iso-Therm — are ideal for listed buildings and heritage properties. Because they are fully breathable and compatible with lime plaster, they do not trap moisture within the wall structure (which is a major concern with modern, non-breathable insulation materials on old buildings). They are also thin enough to preserve the proportions and character of period rooms, window reveals, and mouldings.

If the wall has an active damp problem — such as rising damp or penetrating damp — this must be resolved before any insulation is applied. Insulating over damp masonry will trap the moisture behind the insulation and make the problem worse. We always inspect for damp issues before recommending insulation, and we can treat any damp problems as part of the same project. See our damp proofing services for more information.

    Thin Wall Insulation Questions

How do internal and external wall insulation differ?

Internal insulation is fitted on the room side of the wall and can reduce usable floor area; external insulation is installed outside and changes the exterior finish. Suitability depends on wall construction, exposure, existing moisture, detailing around openings and any applicable planning constraints. Neither approach should be selected from appearance alone. Compare the building and project requirements before choosing a system; external wall insulation is one approach to review.
